Crown them with honor and glory!

The Sacrament of Marriage establishes the foundation for every family church. This foundation needs to be fortified and nurtured every single day by the parents with the following three principles.

#1: Parents live and grow their faith every single day.

If parents and teachers would make their faith their own, then what is communicated to children will be real and engaging.

~Our Church and Our Children by Sophie Koulomzin, pg. xxv

What saves and makes for good children is the life of the parents in the home. The parents need to devote themselves to the love of God. They need to become saints in their relation to their children through their mildness, patience and love. They need to make a new start every day, with a fresh outlook, renewed enthusiasm and love for their children. And the joy that will come to them, the holiness that will visit them, will shower grace on their children.

~Elder Porphyrios

#2: Your home is your Little Church.

The Family Chotki slogan is “Home is where the Orthodox is.”

We know, we know…it is not grammatically correct. That is intentional. We wanted to play with the idea of “Home is where the heart is” to make our point which fits right into this principle focused on the important role of your family home.

In the Sacrament of Marriage, a mystery occurs as two become one. A new family church is established that we must nurture spiritually. In addition, we have to intentionally set up our physical homes to be Christ centered from the location of the icon corner, the role of television in the home, to how much clutter and toys we have, to the habits, rhythms and routines we establish with our children, to a dedicated and committed family practice and rule around screen use and technology in the home.

It is important that when you go to the Church for services, it is an extension of what is already holy and happening in the home.

#3: Kids must grow into taking responsibility of their salvific path

Our educational work should be based on the presupposition that any child or young person can attain faith only in an authentic free act of his own.

~Our Church and Our Children by Sophie Koulomzin, pg. 10
